Go Green from the Bottom Up with our Eco-Friendly Flooring Options

April 21, 2023

Trinity Surfaces commits to providing sustainable products and recycled content resources as you work toward choosing eco-friendly alternatives for your next project, recognizing that many traditional floors are made from materials dependent on non-renewable fossil fuels. Let’s expand on the common designer question: “what are some of the best eco-friendly flooring options?”

Products to consider…

Porcelain & Ceramic Tile. Always a great choice, tile gives you a sustainable building material for your floors and walls.  This durable surface reduces the need to continually replace worn material, stopping additional waste from being sent to a landfill and saving resources through the life of a project. Don’t forget that ceramics are made from natural and plentiful raw materials usually found in close proximity to the factory, reducing fuel consumption and transportation costs.

Recycled Glass. Did you know that glass can be recycled to a 99 percent recyclable product? Recycling is an important global initiative, whose purpose is to lower the amount of product residue in the environment while creating great products from seemingly useless household and industrial wastes. The processing of such glass takes place in a completely closed cycle which leaves no wastes or unwanted by-products. Sustainable glass tiles can turn any space into a luxurious eco-conscious sanctuary.

Cork. At Trinity Surfaces, we are big believers in quality.  Cork flooring allows you an eco-friendly solution with organic and renewable ingredients while providing both high-end quality, versatility and excellent performance. With a life span of over 200 years, the bark of the cork oak tree does not carry sap and can be removed without harming the tree. Once the tree is mature, the bark is harvested/removed and naturally regenerates itself within nine year cycles.

Rubber. As a sustainable resource, rubber can be molded and shaped into almost anything which is why it is one of the number-one eco-friendly resources being used today. Natural and recycled rubber floors are long-lasting, effective, and less harmful for the environment.

Luxury Vinyl Tile. Our partners are committed to environmentally responsible manufacturing practices every day. Luxury vinyl flooring is 100% recyclable. After the product life span, it can be recycled to make new flooring, without pollution or waste production. Produced in a zero-landfill manufacturing facility, processing water and all production waste are 100% recycled in a closed loop system, while 85% of raw materials are sourced within 800 km of the factory.

Pro tip: Look for Green Certifications

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, a program that works to create environmentally responsible built environments for both commercial and residential projects. Click here to find out more about this program through U.S. Green Building Council.

Green Squared® involves one industry, one standard, and one mark and covers the gamut of products used in a tile installation. As the first multi-attribute sustainability standard developed for tiles and tile installation materials, Green Squared uses the transparency and consensus of the ANSI process combined with third party certification to evaluate, validate, and communicate products which have a positive impact on the environment and society.

FloorScore® is the most recognized indoor air quality (IAQ) certification standard for hard surface flooring materials, adhesives, and underlayments. Developed by SCS with the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI), a leading industry trade association of flooring manufacturers and suppliers, it qualifies for many green building schemes including LEED v4, WELL, BREEAM, CHPS, and Green Globes.

GREENGUARD Certified products are scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous third-party chemical emissions standards, helping to reduce indoor air pollution and the risk of chemical exposure.
